Cigars and celebrating have always gone hand in hand. We have seen Hollywood movies where new daddys are sharing cigars with their friends, Michael Jordan took a box of cigars to the locker room after a win and bosses invite best employees to an expensive cigar. When first cigars made it to Europe they meant wealth and exclusiveness. First ones were brought to Spain and traveled on from there. Cigars were extremely rare and owning them was a sign of being rich. Saving cigars for a special moment made total sense.
What occasions are celebrated with cigars?
Even if today premium class cigars are more accessible than in the 16th century Spain, they are still rare and are saved for special occasions.
- Having a baby
Birth of a child is one of the most notable events in one’s life. Tradition of sharing cigars comes from Native Americans, who celebrated every birth by smoking cigars in the tribe. This ritual spread to Europe and North American settlers. Then the father was nowhere near the birth and all he could do was pace in the hallway. To calm the nerves a good cigar and some alcohol was deemed reasonable. Today you probably cannot smoke a cigar in the hospital but the tradition still exists. When a baby is born the new daddy invites friends over to a good cigar and a glass of whiskey or rum. A good choice would be Ramon Allones King of North and a 20 year of Dictador.
